Cecil Christian Knowles, age 86, of Johnson City, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. Mr. Knowles was native of Flomatom, Alabama, but was raised in Pensacola, FL. He was a son of the late Levy and Norma Chaudron Knowles. Mr. Knowles was a graduate of Florida State University, where he met his wife from Johnson City, Genie Hoss Knowles, who passed away in 1977. Mr. Knowles was a veteran of World War II, and served in the United States Army-Air Force. After the war, he re-enlisted for the U.S Air Force, afterwards, he continued service in the U.S Air Force Reserve. In 1951, Mr. Knowles moved to Johnson City, where he was a State Farm Insurance agent for over 40 years. Mr. Knowles was a longtime member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served on the Board of Directors, and was a past Sunday School President. He was a member of the Nativic Civitans Club for over 50 years and a past member of the Life Underwriters Association. Mr. Knowles had previously served on the Board of Directors of Ashley Academy, and was a member of Delta Sigma Pi, Business Fraternity at Florida State University. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Johnson City Post. Mr. Knowles was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Pensacola, Florida. In addition to his parents, Mr. Knowles was preceded in death by his wife, Genvieve “Genie” Hoss Knowles, in 1977; two brothers and sister-in-law, Alfred Knowles, Earl and Pauline Knowles; sister and brother-in-law, Rachael and Clyde Wilbourn. Survivors include his daughter, Julie Knowles, Johnson City; son, Mike Knowles, Johnson City; sister-in-law, Joyce Knowles, Holt, Florida; 6 nephews, Bobby, David, Kenneth, Philip Knowles, Tim and Greg Wilbourn. The funeral service for Mr. Knowles will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 13, 2014, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Pate officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:00 until 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.  The graveside service and internment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Nativic Civitan Club and Mr. Knowles’ Nepehws. To those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Chris Hemphill, the staff of Franklin Woods Community Hospital, Christian Care Center Rehab and to Amedisys Hospice.
