It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Danny Keith McCurry announces the death of their beloved husband, father, son and brother. On January 29 Danny lost his battle with pancreatic cancer but the disease certainly did not defeat him. Danny faced the final challenge of his life with unwavering faith. He demonstrated amazing strength, courage, dignity, and grace; just as he did with everything throughout his life. Danny was born on June 20, 1961 in Johnson City, the youngest of five children to Ruth Ayers McCurry and the late Jay McCurry. In June of 2013 Danny married the love of his life, Kim Wilson McCurry. They made their home at Quail Hollow in Elizabethton. He was the proud father of Morgan McCurry and Jay McCurry both of Johnson City, and was an exceptional stepfather to Jordan Peters of Elizabethton and Justin Peters of Atlanta, GA. Danny’s sisters are Jaywina Fagan of Jonesborough, Gail (Bill) Hicks of Johnson City, and brothers are Terry McCurry of Unicoi, and Gary (Cindy)McCurry of Jonesborough. He was a loving brother in law to Melissa Wilson of Morganton, NC and Debbie (James) Morris of Glasgow, KY and “Uncle Danny” to a great host of nieces and nephews. Danny was a 1979 graduate of Science Hill High School. He received his B. S. degree in accounting from Bristol College where he was a member of the baseball team. Throughout his life he played on many softball teams and coached Little League baseball for the Johnson City Major League. He treasured the opportunity to coach and mentor his young players. If you were a friend of Danny’s you were a friend for life. He remained very close to childhood friends as well as those he met along the way. For over 30 years Danny worked as a corporate accountant at Siemens (formerly Texas Instruments) with their Orlando, Johnson City, and Atlanta offices. He loved his job and especially loved the people he worked with. Every Spring and Fall Danny also worked for his friends at Bristol Campground during Race Week. There again, Danny made many lasting friendships with co-workers and NASCAR fans from around the country. If Danny were writing this today he would express his immense gratitude for all the amazing love and support that he and Kim have received, especially during the past year. It would be impossible to adequately explain how much all of you have meant to him and how you helped to sustain him. He would want to thank his Siemens family who has been incredible in their friendship and support. A special thanks to the “Deck Team” for your wonderful demonstration of love and friendship. A heartfelt thanks to his Bristol Campground family for initiating and executing the generous #DannyStrong campaign. Anyone who thinks of Danny will certainly remember his ever present infectious smile. Danny was a loving man who had deep faith in God and lived his life with enthusiasm and kindness. He was always encouraging and supportive. His wonderful generous spirit will be profoundly missed by his family and friends. A service to celebrate the life of Danny McCurry will be held on Wednesday, January 31 at 7pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services in Johnson City with Pastor Tony Trott officiating. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service beginning at 5:00 pm. The burial will be at 12:30 pm on Thursday, February 1 at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be J.T. McCurry, Gary McCurry, Terry McCurry, Jordan Peters, Justin Peters, Dean Baggett, and Dwight Britt. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Hicks, James Morris, Steve Tilson, Wendall Snapp, and Rob Love.
