Danny Ray Sams, 71, Watauga, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late H.S. and Carrie Blevins Sams. He was a 1961 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Danny retired from the Elizabethton Fire Department after 28 ½ years of service. He was a member of the Southside Christian Church. He was a member of the Elizabethton Golf Course and loved to fish.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Jack Sams and Two Sisters: Infant Phyllis Sams and Helen Rachel.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years: Elsie Skeans Sams. Two Daughters & Sons-in-law: Lori & David Guy and Kimberly & Allen Rasnick all of Watauga. His Grandchildren: Amanda Hatley, Daniel Rasnick and Elisha Rasnick. Two Very special nieces: Lisa Long, Nashville and Carrie Dugger, Elizabethton. Seven Brothers: F.D. Sams, Elizabethton, Jerry Sams and wife Betty of Florida, Thomas Sams and wife Barbara, Watauga, Eddie Sams and wife Shirley, Watauga, Freddie Sams and wife Pat of South Carolina, Nolan Sams, Elizabethton and Johnny Sams and wife Penny, Elizabethton. Four Sisters: JoAnn Waycaster, Elizabethton, Willa Mae “Tootsie” Hill and husband Ray, Elizabethton, Dianna Pleasant and husband Donald, Elizabethton, and Pauletta Gail “Polly” McPeek and husband Terry, South Carolina. Several nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Burleson and Rev. Jack Lloyd officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Tom Long. Active Pallbearers will be Elizabethton Fire Department Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Bob Morton, Allen Rasnick, David Guy, Allen Skeans, Shane Dugger, Tom Long, Guy Sams, Junior McAninch, Tony Edwards, Tim Edwards, R.L. Hambrick, Jim Hartley, employees and former employees of the Elizabethton Fire Department and his friends and buddies of the Elizabethton Gold Course.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9:20 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery.
