Estel “E.G.” Kirby, age 86, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Mr. Kirby was born in Mable, North Carolina to the late Oscar and Bitha Roberts Kirby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Stout Kirby, on February 19, 2009; two sisters, Velma Atwood and Ina Richardson; and four brothers, Vance, Victor, Ed and Dearl Kirby.

Mr. Kirby was retired from Sperry of Bristol and was a charter member of East River Park Christian Church. He was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166 and was a United States Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict on the Destroyer, U.S.S. Hawkins. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed being with family.

Survivors include a daughter, Chana Kirby of Elizabethton; two sons, Ron Kirby and wife Diane of Elizabethton and Don Kirby and wife Beverly of Roan Mountain; five grandchildren, Tyler, Peyton, Stephanie, Michele and husband Jeremy, and Nicole and husband Caleb; and five great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A celebration graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. John Smith and his son, Mr. Don Kirby, Ministers. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at his residence. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Community Living Center at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Dr. Connie Holladay and staff at the VA Medical Center, and In Home Primary Care, for all the love and care extended to Mr. Kirby during his illness.
