Master Sergeant Fred L. Campbell, U.S. Army (Retired), age 80, passed away on his great granddaughter, Allie Greene’s, birthday, Monday, January 20, 2014, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
Mr. Campbell was a native of Carter County and a son of the late George John and Nora Johnson Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Campbell.
Mr. Campbell was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a former member of Fairview and Sinking Creek Baptist churches. He was a member of Gideon International and a 50-year member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge No. 238 F&AM, a member of Jericho Shrine, a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, and a member of Kerbela Shrine Temple of Knoxville, Tennessee.
Mr. Campbell was a veteran of the United States Air Force, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and retired from the United States Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the American Legion Watauga Post No. 49.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara Culbert Campbell, of the home; a daughter, Robyn Greene and husband, Bill, Old Hickory, TN; a son, Terry Campbell, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Khara Greene, Old Hickory, TN, Jonathan Chris Campbell and wife, Kim, Watauga, Charles Ryan Greene, Hermitage, TN, N. Chase Greene, Old Hickory, TN, and Colby “C.J.” Campbell, Watauga; two great granddaughters, Allie Grace Greene and Hailey Ryan Greene, both of Old Hickory; a sister, Phyllis Taylor and husband, Kenneth, Johnson City, TN; a brother, Don Campbell and wife, Joy, Kingsport; three brothers-in-law, Conley Culbert, Athens, TN, Bobby Culbert and wife, Orpha, Florida, and Kenneth Culbert and wife, Sue. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The family requests the comfort and honor of your presence at the Celebration of the Life service for Mr. Fred Campbell on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Music will be under the direction of his son-in-law, Rev. Bill Greene and Pat Presnell.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday.
The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 23, 2013, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. Kenneth Jordan officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the Military Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, members of Gideon International, Elizabethton Camp — where he was a charter member, David Ferguson, Deacons of Grace Baptist Church, Leonard Peters’ Adult Men’s II Sunday School Class, and members of Happy Valley High School graduating class of 1952, Joe and Elaine Hopkins, Sarah and Mike Sellers, Harold Lingerfelt, Harley Carden, Bill and Virginia Crawford, Howard Jewett, Paul Dean, and Jean Renfro, Bill and Doris Clark, Lowell and Frances Simmons, Charles and Wanda Sparks, and David and Pat Tester. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 10:15 AM on Thursday to go in procession.
A special thank you is extended to the staff, caregivers and doctors at the Community Living Center and Linda Coeburn of the Vist Group at the VA Medical Center for all the love and care shown to Mr. Campbell and his family.
