Mrs. Georgia Arnett Williams, age 97, of 2007-B Sherwood Drive, Johnson City, TN, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Appalachian Christian Village, Johnson City.
The daughter of Christopher and Mary Alice Walker Arnett, Mrs. Williams was a native of Elizabethton, TN. She graduated from Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University before teaching for the Carter County School System.
She also lived in Gulfport, Mississippi, for several years and was an Instructor in the Ground School of the United States Air Force, later taking a position as Administrative Assistant to the President of Gulf National Bank in Gulfport.
While there she joined Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority, serving as secretary until she returned back to Elizabethton due to her father’s illness. She then opened Georg-Carol’s, her own ladies’ ready-to-wear boutique in downtown Elizabethton, which she operated for over 25 years.
Georgia held memberships in the Business and Professional Women’s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a former Gray Lady at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. She also enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and belonged to a number of bridge clubs in Johnson City.
Mrs. Williams was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton. After marrying Edward P. Williams, she moved to Johnson City and attended First Christian Church, where she was a member and past President of the Mr. & Mrs. Sunday School Class. Georgia also served on the Residents’ Council of Appalachian Christian Village. She and her husband traveled a great deal throughout 48 of the 50 United States of America, as well as Canada and Europe. She and her husband were active members of the Johnson City Country Club for many years.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Edward P. Williams, in 2002; and by her only brother, Harry E. Arnett, in 2003.
Mrs. Williams is survived by a sister-in-law, Edna Johnson Arnett, Elizabethton; nephew, Chris Arnett and wife, Sue, Elizabethton; nephew, Alan Arnett, of Winchester, VA; nephew, Norman Williams and wife, Ann, La Grange, GA. Others include three great nephews, James Arnett and wife, Denise, Bluff City, Neil Arnett, Elizabethton, Scott Williams and wife, Eve, Lawrenceville, GA; great niece, April Williams Taylor and husband, Russell, La Grange, GA; and a number of cousins. Also surviving are special friends Howard and Rowena Bowers, of Johnson City.
The graveside service for Mrs. Williams will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 28, 2014, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Friends may register at Appalachian Funeral Home on Monday from 8:00 am until service time. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:30 PM Monday.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mr. & Mrs. Sunday School Class of First Christian Church, Johnson City, members of the United Methodist Women from First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton, and friends and neighbors.
