Mr. Harold “Gene” Smith, age 86, of 614 Pine Hill Road, Elizabethton, TN, passed away on Saturday, March 08, 2014, at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Virginia, he was the son of the late Burl and Emma Hall Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Joyce Lipford Smith; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Smith; two great-grandchildren, Austin & Madison Godfrey; five brothers, Howard Smith, Roy Smith, Herman Smith, Ray Smith & Walter Smith; and one sister, Ruby Simerly.

Gene was a United States Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church and the Mossy Creek Lodge #353 F&AM Masonic Lodge in Jefferson City, TN. He retired as a sales coordinator with Parks Belk.

Survivors include one son, David Smith, of the home; one daughter, Janie McKinney and husband, Rick “Doc”, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Britany Johnson and husband, Jesse, Johnson City; Hollie Bulla and husband, John, Johnson City; Leslie Godfrey and husband, Jonathan, Knoxville; Clayton Smith, Elizabethton; one great-grandchild, Nolan Smith; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, including: Carroll & Jessie Montgomery; Gary & Nancy Lipford, Jimmy Lipford and Charles Lipford, all of Elizabethton.

The family requests the comfort and honor of your presence at the funeral service for Mr. Harold “Gene” Smith at 7:00 P.M. Monday, March 10, 2014 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway Percy Funeral & Cremation Services with Pastor Bruce Hendrich officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:00 P.M. on Monday, prior to the funeral service in the chapel.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Jesse Johnson, Clayton Smith, John Bulla, Jonathan Godfrey, Keith Raulston & Chipper Montgomery. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
