After 69 wonderful years, Joe Shook, of Elizabethton went home to be with his Jesus on Thursday, May 2, 2019 from the Johnson City Medical Center. Joe was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late John Ogden Shook and Florence Lucille Jones Shook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second mother, Joye V. Shook; a sister, Becky Shook; a special aunt, Sarah M. Shook; a nephew, Jason Bowers; and several other aunts, uncles and cousins have also preceded him.

Joe always had a smile on his face and everyone loved joining in with his laughter. Joe was a supported employee of the Tennessee Vocational Training Center and retired after 40 years of dedicated service. He had an incredible work ethic and shared his patriotism by raising and lowering the American Flag at his work place and home with pride. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Elizabethton and he loved his church and his church family. Joe also had many favorite things, including Johnny Cash, Jason Witten, the American flag, eagles, Batman, singing, trucks and his cats. He was also a huge Elizabethton Cyclones and UT fan. Joe touched the hearts of many and will be fondly remembered as a kind and gentle soul.

Those left to cherish his wonderful memory include two sisters, Sally Shook Harris, of Elizabethton and Ellen Shook Hutchins and husband Charlie, also of Elizabethton; a brother, George Vining, of Johnson City; three nephews, Trey Harris and wife Sheri, of Bassett, VA, Andy Bowers, of Atlanta, GA and Scott Bowers, of Elizabethton; one niece, Courtney Joye Bowers, of Elizabethton; and two great nieces, Anne Catherine Harris, of Bassett, VA and Addison Claire Harris, also of Bassett, VA.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Joe Shook will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 6, 2019 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. John Bunn, officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Trey Harris, Andy Bowers, Scott Bowers and Charlie Hutchins. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 AM on Monday.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to the Dawn of Hope,500 E Oakland Ave, Johnson City, TN 37601 in memory of Joe Shook.

The family would like to especially thank Deanna Branham and all the staff of Enhanced Support Services of Johnson City for the exceptional love and care given to Joe.
