Kathryn “Kitty” Louise Whetzel, age 75, a beautiful person, loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in Milligan on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 2:45 pm.
Kitty was a native of Johnson City and the daughter of Geter and Lula Hughes. After graduating from Happy Valley High School in 1955, she married Roy M. Whetzel in 1957 and relocated to Northern Virginia.
Kitty was a valuable and professional business woman whose achievements were well recognized for many years before retiring from Contel Telephone Company.
She was an excellent seamstress. For many years she made formal gowns for herself, clothes for her daughter, and while in the Bahamas designed and created costumes for the Little Theatre.
Her most impressive gift though was her ability to love. She gave generously. The compassion that Kitty had was not only for her family, but for everyone around her who was less fortunate. Kitty also believed in second chances and that all people were able to change with God’s help.
Kitty was an active member of Milligan Freewill Baptist Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and served as an officer for a number of years.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Glenn, Kenneth, Bill, Charles and Roger Hughes and her sister Nancy Froman.
Kitty is survived by her son, Roy Whetzel, Jr. (his wife Natalie); her daughter Joy Meeler; three grandchildren, Alyson, Leslie, and Eric; two great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Thai; her sisters, Bea Carr and Betty Lamar; her brother, Troy Hughes; and a special friend of 50 years, Marie Robinson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Mark Street officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joel Street and April Pitman.
