Louis “Lou” E. Mayo, age 73, of Elk Park, North Carolina went home to be with his Lord on Monday, December 5, 2022 at his home. Lou was born in Raleigh, North Carolina to the late Billy and Margaret (Poole) Mayo. In addition to his parents, Lou was also preceded in death by his wife, Louise K. Mayo.
Lou retired as a correctional officer and was of the Baptist faith. He was a North Carolina Tar heels lover as well as Carolina Panthers. Lou loved his family most of all and will be dearly missed.
Those left to cherish Lou’s memory include his two children, Kristina (John) Kennedy of Chuckey, TN and Ed (Jennifer) Mayo of Bristol, TN; two stepsons, Jordon (Destiny) Buck and Logan (Jessica) Buck, both of Roan Mountain; his best friend, fiancé, and longtime companion, Vera Buck of Elk Park, NC; his grandchildren (who knew him as Gampies), Ethan Mayo and Kaylee Mayo; and his step grandchildren (who knew him as Pop Pop), Karson Buck, Lucas Buck, Jackson Buck, Kendall Buck, Karter Buck, and Kamron Buck; two sisters, Beth (Tom) Sims of Hampton and Cindy (Todd) Hammond of Mount Holly, NC; several nieces and nephews and his special dog, “Harley”.
A service to honor Lou’s life will be conducted at 1:30 PM on Sunday, December 11, 2022 in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain with Mr. James Fuller officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 1:30 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Sunday.
The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be John Kennedy, Logan Buck, Jordon Buck, Ethan Mayo, Steve Pritchard, and Toby Pritchard. Tom Sims will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to thank the staff of Amorem Hospice in Boone, North Carolina, the staff of LifeCare of Banner Elk, and Vera Buck for their kindness and the compassionate care shown to Lou during his illness.
