Marjene Cox Chapman, Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
As a native of Ozark, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Sherman P. and Mitti Casey Cox, as well as sister of the late Delores Smith, also of Alabama.
Along with her husband of nearly fifty-eight years, Rev. R. Alan Chapman, Marjene is survived by her three children: Tamara Heston and her husband Philip Heston, Jr., Leighton Chapman, Evangeline Hurter and her husband Cliff; and grandchildren: Second Lieutenant Chapman Thomas, Graham and Bradford Hurter.
Marjene was an honor graduate of Ozark High School, Ozark, Alabama, and Montreat College, North Carolina.
After meeting her husband at a mission conference in Ashville, North Carolina, in November of 1957, they were married on May 25, 1958. For thirty-two years, every Monday, Alan faithfully brought Marjene a red rose to work. For fifty-eight years he gave her the same, large Valentine card with a new written message each year. Theirs was, truly, a love for the ages.
Throughout the years, she has shared her talents playing piano and organ, as well as working with youth groups and teaching adult Sunday School classes in the various churches where her husband served as pastor. While employed as office manager at Our Saviour Lutheran Church for thirty-two years, Marjene had a heart for those in need. There were times she gave her own money to those who came through the doors looking for help. Often, simply her contagious laughter and her infectious smile could change the mood and spirit of those around her. With the heart of a servant, her life forever impacted all who came in contact with her.
A Memorial Service for Marjene will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 17, 2016, with Pastor Louis Imsande, Dr. Angus Shaw, Pastor Ed Myers, and Pastor Jim Nipper officiating. Following the service, friends and family are encouraged to proceed to the church fellowship hall for an ice cream social and share memories of Marjene. A private burial will be held at Happy Valley Memorial Gardens prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Our Saviour Lutheran Church Pastor’s Discretionary Fund for the Needy, 212 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, TN, 37604, or Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC, 28607-3000.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.tetrickfuneralhome.com. Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, 3001 Peoples Street, Johnson City, TN, 37604 (423-610-7171), is honored to serve the Chapman family during this difficult time.
