Mary Ella Machen Johnson was born in Elizabethton, TN on December 6, 1948.  She was the oldest daughter of the late Rev. M. D. Machen and Ola Mae Green Machen.

Mrs. Johnson attended Douglas High School and graduated from Elizabethton High School, with honors in 1966.  She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh NC in 1970.  She graduated with honors, magna cum laude.  She was a member of Alpha Kappa Mu and Phi Kappa Alpha Honor Societies.  She appeared in “Who’s Who” Among Students In American Colleges and Universities (1969-70) Edition.  She was also a member of “Mu Phi Beta” Music Sorority, on the Dean’s list and received numerous awards in Music.

She received a Master of Education Degree in Special Education at East Tennessee State University in 1985.  She was a graduate assistant while enrolled there.

In previous years, Mrs. Johnson was an elementary Music Teacher in Surry County, VA; Dickenson County, VA, and Johnson City school systems.  She was a Special Education Teacher in Sullivan County, TN school system.

Mary was a Christian follower of Jesus Christ.  She contributed to various charities including: St. Jude’s Hospital, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, InTouch Ministries and Wellmont Hospice to name a few.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Pearl Davis and Lydia Machen; two brothers, Samuel Machen and James Allen Machen; brother-in-law, Greg Davis; and sister-in-law, Amelia Machen.

She is survived by her loving husband Ronald Johnson; seven brothers, David (Marcie) Machen Jr. of Carrolton, TX, Daniel L. (Irmgard) Machen of Germany, Joel (Myra) Machen of Manchester, TN, Jonathan (Jean) Machen of  Lakeville, MN, Matthew (Jackie) Machen of Johnson City, TN, Mark Machen of Daleville, VA and Nathaniel Machen of Ave Maria, FL; four sisters, Ann Pritchard of Hopkins, MN, Dorcas (Ron) Michaelson of Maplewood, MN, Ida (Rick) Zimmerman of Kingsport, TN and Denise (Arthur) Anthony of Frederick, MD; as well as a host of special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3:00pm September 13, 2018 at Central Baptist Church.   The family will receive friends from 2:00pm until the hour of service.  Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Gardens, Elizabethton TN.
