Mattie M. Ashburn, almost 92, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on January 5, 2018, at the Johnson City Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Ashburn was born on June 19, 1926, in Unicoi County, TN, the daughter of John and Eliza (Delinger) Garland. They preceded her in death along with her husband, Harry; her brothers, Wilson, Jesse, and Monroe Garland; and her sisters, Janie Garland, Bessie Williams, Julie Furrow, Katie Bowman and Edith Sneyd.

Mrs. Ashburn was raised in a large family on a farm in Unicoi County. She was a very loving person to both her family and friends, and had a deep rooted faith in the Lord, reading her Bible every day. The family knows that “God has you in His arms, we have you in our hearts.” She worked at the Concord Custom Cleaners in Johnson City for many years and was an expert in the dry cleaning field. She loved working her word search puzzles, campfires by the camp site, and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Ashburn is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Whitaker, Delores Glass, Dolly Smith (and her husband, Delbert), Mary Jo Hopkins, and Hazel Lane (and her husband, Jessie); her grandchildren, Anita Owens, Gary Glass, James Glass, Thomas Stout, John Holmes, David Holmes, Brent Richardson and Adam Holmes; her great grandchildren, Robert Owens, Joshua Owens, Danielle Owens, Jalen Glass, Michael Glass, Elisha Glass, Emma Holmes, George Holmes, Malia Cole, Hayley Cole, and Charlie Holmes; her brother, Tom Garland; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 1:00 pm, at Tetrick Funeral Home, 211 North Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, TN. Pastor Gary Seaman will officiate, and pallbearers will be grandsons and friends. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12 noon until the time service. Entombment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
