Mrs. Mattie Sorrell passed into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. She lived her life as a devoted wife and loving mother, patient, kind, and tender hearted. She would never speak ill of others and tried to live by the Golden Rule.
Mrs. Sorrell was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and a daughter of the late John A. Davis and Cora Coldiron Davis. Mattie was preceded in death by three brothers, Jessie Davis, Lundy Davis and Gwyn Davis, and seven sisters, DeEtta Wagner, Helen Hinkle, Maude Sams, Olive Cole, Opal Odum, Millie Greer and Edna Blevins. After moving from Ashe County, Mattie lived in Elizabethton, Tenn., for many years. During her time in high school in Elizabethton she was hired by Dr. Hale and worked in his drug store where many referred to her as the prettiest little girl in Elizabethton. She met her husband, Lon E. Sorrell (“Bud”), in Elizabethton and they were married in 1944 on the Navy base in Providence, R.I., where Lon was stationed. After the war they returned to Elizabethton, Tenn., while Lon attended school on the G.I. Bill as did many of that great generation. Employment brought Mattie and “Bud” to Winston-Salem in 1951 where they have remained.
She was a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church.
Mattie is survived by her husband of 71 years, and their son, Michael, and two grandchildren, Jana (Sorrell) Swaim and Matthew Sorrell, all of Winston-Salem.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
The service will be held at Davis Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 2 p.m.
Psalm 19:14:
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
