Roy Marvin Garland, 77, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Garland retired from the City of Elizabethton Sanitation Department and was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. Mr. Garland was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Quillen and Cressie Garland; his wife, Barbara Jean Pierce Garland; his mother-in-law, Pearl Cox; and by several brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, David Garland and wife Joan and Richard Garland and wife Sylvia, all of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, John Garland and wife Lisa, Joey Garland and wife Jeannie, Brandon Garland and Lucas Garland; one great-granddaughter, Gloria Garland; and his special father-in-law, Earl Cox, Watauga. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at a funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Garland on Tuesday, January 28, at 6 p.m. in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with the Rev. Jerry Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the funeral service. The graveside service and entombment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, at the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Johnny Crowe, Steve Lyle, Eddie Julian, Jeff McCloud, Rick Babb, Zane Blevins and Tom Cook. Everyone will meet at Hathaway-Percy Funeral & Cremation Services at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
