Sarah Alice “Dolly” Whitney Hughes , age 88, of Johnson City, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015 at Agape Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Johnson City, following a brief illness. A lifelong native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late Walter Bruce and Emma Mae Copas Whitney. Dolly started her retail career in downtown Johnson City in 1945, however many will remember her from Massengills Specialty Shop where she worked from 1964 until 2009. Mrs. Hughes was known for her experience in wedding planning. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, where she was a member of the Esther Class and taught Sunday School and worked with the youth group. Mrs. Hughes was a 1945 Science Hill Graduate.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her brother, James Neal Whitney, Earl Douglas Whitney; one sister, Mary Louise Whitney.
Survivors include her son, James “Jim” Hughes and wife Gayle, Johnson City; two granddaughters, Whitney Ricker and husband Justin, Grayson, GA, Jacqueline Montileone and husband Joe, Nolansville, TN; great grandchild, Jackson Ricker, Grayson, GA; two nieces, Mary Whitney and Alice Whitney; one nephew, Jim Whitney; great nieces and nephews, Sam, Amanda, Neal and Andrew.
The funeral service for Mrs. Hughes will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 10, 2015 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Dr. Ronald F. Murray officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside service and interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be Sam Whitney, Justin Ricker, Joe Montileone, Ambers Wilson, Johnny Moore, Bill Darden, Steve Darden, and Pete Peterson. Honorary pallbearers will be Anne Knight, The Esther Sunday School Class, Pete Speropulos, and Frank Hawkins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, Music Ministry, 300 N. Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37601. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Agape Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for their loving care.
