SFC Carmon Whisnant, United States Army (Ret.) age 93, of Hampton went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 10, 2016 from the Hillview Health Center of Elizabethton. Carmon was born on September 19, 1922 and was a native of the Tiger Creek Community in Carter County, born to the late Isaac (Ike) Andrew Whisnant and Lillie Mae Royal Whisnant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Terry Allen Whisnant; and several brothers and sisters.

Carmon was a United States Army veteran, having served 20 years. He served in the 104th Infantry Division, Timberwolf and he served in both World War II and the Korean War. He received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star and was a member of the DAV. He also retired from ETSU where he worked in the Campus Police Unit. Carmon was a member of East Side Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and operated the sound system. He loved to hunt and fish, and raising cattle.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Charlotte Nave Whisnant, of the home; three daughters, Carmen Dianne Nelson, of Johnson City, Ellen Charlene Bateman, of Hampton, and Tammy Lynn Collins and husband Kevin, of Elizabethton; and five grandchildren, Todd Nelson, Travis Nelson, Shane Bateman, Amber Hall and Adam Collins. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Carmon Whisnant will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Reverend Ronnie Campbell, officiating. Music will be provided by John Brookshire. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Todd Nelson, Travis Nelson, Shane Bateman, Adam Collins, Jamie Hall and Woody Whisnant. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of the East Side Baptist Church, friends and neighbors, and his friends at Hillview Health Center. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Thursday, to go in procession.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Nursing Staff of Hillview Health Center for the love and care shown to Mr. Whisnant, during his illness.
