Mrs. Vergie Leona “Granny” Taylor, age 98, five days short of her 99th birthday, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, with her children by her side, on Friday, February 23, 2018, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was born at home in the Simerly Creek community of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Celia Willis. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years, William W. “Bill” Taylor, Sr. in November of 2000 and a brother.

Mrs. Taylor was a lifelong resident of Carter County. She was a former employee of Bemberg Corporation, and after her retirement from there, she worked at T.A. Dugger Junior High School where she was affectionately known as “Granny” to the students, teachers, and other staff members. She was a devoted member, as well as the oldest active member, of the Elizabethton First Church of the Nazarene and continued to attend until her health failed, only during the last several weeks of her life. Granny loved to read her Bible and started every day at the breakfast table with her Bible open in front of her. She was also a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took delight in her family. She will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish her memory include a son William W. “Woody“ Taylor, Jr. and his wife, Carol Ann, of Columbia, SC; a daughter, Teresa Hopson and her husband, Sam, of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Capt. Michael E. Taylor, (USN) and his wife, Laura; Julie Eadie and her husband, Earle; Tom Hopson, Janey Taylor, Chrissy Hopson; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor Eadie, Christopher Eadie, Samantha Eadie, and Delaney Hopson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Taylor will be conducted on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Rev. Kenley Knight and Rev. Raymond W. Amos, Sr., officiating. Music will be under the direction of Julie Eadie and David Arney. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service, or at the home of her daughter, Teresa, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on her birthday, Wednesday, February 28, at 10:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Tommy Hopson, Capt. Michael E. Taylor, Earle Eadie, Christopher Eadie, Mike Roberts and her cousin, Clarence Willis. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home who cared for her so lovingly, and the members of First Church of the Nazarene. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Alzheimer’s Association, 2020 Meadowview Parkway, Suite 306, Kingsport, TN 37660, or charity of their choice.
