Wayne Stuart Eggers, 92, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at Hermitage Health Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Etter Julian Eggers.
Wayne was a 1940 graduate of Watauga Academy, Butler. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He owned and operated Wayne’s Variety Store and Fireworks for several years. He was a former member of Little Milligan Baptist Church, where he served as choir director for a number of years, and was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where he was a choir member for several years.
Wayne was a member of Gideon International, the Elizabethton Camp. He had served as President of the Watauga Academy Alumni Association and was former President of the Elizabethton Optimist Club. He was a recipient of the Good Shepherd Award of the Boy Scouts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Edwina McQueen Eggers and Suzy Mathes Eggers, and a brother, Homer “Smoky” Eggers.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Jill Cates and husband Rick, Elizabethton, and Sandra Eggers, Sacramento, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Gayle Shaw Eggers, New Port Richey, Fla.; five grandchildren, Lisa Marie Mendonca and husband Mel, Krista Laws, Benny Lee Laws, Travis Joel Eggers and Micah Cates; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Marrow and Bonham Buchanon; and two sisters, Thelma Cutshall and Louise Hyder, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Wayne Eggers will be conducted at noon Saturday, January 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be under the direction of Gordon Kyte. Active pallbearers will be Micah Cates, Travis Joel Eggers, Hobie Hyder, Jonathan Roberson, Tony Deloach, James Smith, Brent Nidiffer and David Ferguson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Watauga Academy Alumni Association, members of the Gideon International, Elizabethton Camp, and choir members of Grace Baptist Church. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Hermitage Health Center and former caregivers before entering the nursing home for the excellent love and care that was received.
