Winnie Honeycutt Collins, 89, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.
She was the daughter of the late Joe and Rene Ledford Honeycutt and was born in the Beelog Community, Yancey County, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. “Mort” Collins, on April 22, 2005; four sisters, Ethel Haney, Pearl Forehand, Cleo Jackson and Janie Pierce; and three brothers, John Honeycutt, R.C. “Vell” Honeycutt and William “Bill” Honeycutt.
Mrs. Collins had worked in retail during her career, at J.C. Penny and the H.S. Kress Co. She was also a homemaker who loved to garden, can and cook, especially for her family. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Aiken, S.C.
Mrs. Collins is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Deloris Collins, Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Randi Collins, Elizabethton; a great-grandson, Preston M. Hite, Elizabethton; a great-granddaughter to be born March 16, 2014, Parker M. Hite; two special nieces, Helen Duvall, her companion and constant friend, Elizabethton, and Sudie Torres, Elizabethton; and her four-legged friend, her dog, Jenny, who was constantly at her side. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The comfort and honor of your presence is requested at the funeral service for Mrs. Collins on Monday, January 27, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Brother R. Dayton Lewis officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dayton and Linda Lewis. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the service. The committal and entombment service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 28, at 11 a.m. in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be David Collins, Todd Reed, Rick Duvall, Kenny Nave, Monie Honeycutt, Brooks Monroe, Ryan Hite and Steve Hinkle. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to The Carter County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 134, Elizabethton, TN 37644.
