image Andrew Smith, 85, Elizabethton, entered into rest on January 28, 2011, at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Elizabethton.

A native of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, he was the son of the late William Filmore and Mary Willis Smith. He had lived most of his life in Avery County, North Carolina.

Mr. Smith was a retired construction worker. He was of the Church of Christ faith. He loved fishing, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. Mr. Smith proudly served in the United States Army A Company, 255th Engineers Combat Battalion during World War II and was stationed in both Italy and Germany. He and his company were involved in the 1944 Italian Campaign.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Marie Smith; his son, Gary Smith; his brother, Albert Smith; and his sister, Francis Smith.

Survivors include the following: his son, Greg Smith, Elizabethton; two daughters, Shirley Hughes and husband, Larry, Elizabethton, and Patricia Smith, Bristol; three brothers, Charles Smith and wife, Verdie, Marion, North Carolina, Edward Smith, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Richard Smith and wife, Debra, Icard, North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Lucy Kathleen Davis, Elizabethton; two sisters, Myrtle Craig, Marion, North Carolina, and Inez Stanley, Spruce Pine, North Carolina; one granddaugher, Teri Reach and husband, Eric; five grandsons, Michael Smith and wife, Becky, Jonathan Smith, Andy Smith, Daniel Smith and Brian Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Mckynlee Dawn Smith. Mr. Smith is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Owens officiating.

Graveside services and Interment will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the following: employees and directors of Elizabethton Federal.

The family would like to express a sincere “Thank You” to Judy and Victor Deloach and the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Also, deep appreciation is extended to Dr. Jonathan Bremer and Anna Lingerfelt.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011, at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Larry Hughes.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion and the Tennessee National Guard.

Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, to go to the cemetery.
