Barbara Sue Jennings Reed of Johnson City passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the Appalachian Christian Village Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Reed, who was 81, had suffered from a long illness. She was born in Elizabethton May 16, 1931, the second youngest of 11 children of Forrest Preston Jennings and Fannie Markwood Piper Jennings.
Mrs. Reed attended Elizabethton High School, and later attended the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she graduated with honors in education. Mrs. Reed taught sixth grade in the Nashville public school system for 25 years, where she was greatly loved and admired by her students and fellow teachers. She was a life long member of NEA.
After retirement, Mrs. Reed and her husband moved to Johnson City, where she had lived for the last nineteen years.
Mrs. Reed married Dorsey C. Reed, also from Elizabethton, February 6, 1951. They recently celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Reed was a member of the Senior Sunday School class of Cornerstone Church in Johnson City.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-laws: Steven and Anne Reed of Alexandria, Va.; and Kevin and Susan Reed, of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren and spouses, John Reed of Alexandria, Virginia; Robert and Katie Reed of Richmond, Va.; and Margaret Reed and Tom Millar of Alexandria, Va.; and a great-granddaughter, Ruby Carter Reed, of Richmond.
Her family was the joy and delight of her life. In addition to her husband, children, grandchildren and great granddaughter, Mrs. Reed is survived by her sister, Margaret Holloway, and her brother, William Jennings, both of Johnson City, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Cornerstone Church from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013, with services to immediately follow. Dr. Barry Burns will officiate. Burial will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton.
The “Compassion Meal” will be prepared by the Senior Sunday School class for the family and seniors.
