Billie Faye Phillips Smith, 71, 411 East I Street, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at her home.
She was the daughter of the late Christine Ervin Phillips and George E. Phillips Sr. and was born in Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn Phillips, and a brother, George E. Phillips Jr.
Mrs. Smith was a retired nurse. She was a member of the Phillippi Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in the church food ministry. She was also active in the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include three sons, Derrick Phillips and his wife, John, Tucson, Ariz., Daryl Shy and his wife, Akiko, Oakland, Calif., and Donald Shy and his wife, Sharon, Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Kristina Shy and Kristopher Johnson. A host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 22, at the Phillippi Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Joseph Hollifield, Rev. Ernest Widby Sr., Minister Sonya Price and Rev. Terrance Turner Sr. officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Phillippi Missionary Baptist Church Choir. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, and at her home at other times. Interment will follow the service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Robert Davis, Ethan Thomas, Dale Bass, Vincent Redd, Stan Cannon and Robert Webster. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Holmes, Kelvin Thomas, George Richmond, Corey Davis and James F. Ervin. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to The American Cancer Society, c/o Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
