Mr. Charles Howard Hendrix, Jr. 67, of Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.

He was a life long resident of Carter County and was the son of the late Howard Hendrix, Sr. and Sally Treadway Hendrix.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three infant brothers.

He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, attended Milligan College and graduated from East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served his country during the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal, serving on the USS Sperry and the USS Albert David.

Mr. Hendrix was retired from the Carter County School System where he taught middle school at Happy Valley. During his summer breaks he was chosen to participate in programs regarding math and science at the NASA Space Center.

He was a member of Southside Christian Church and was a past elder. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #622 F and AM. Mr. Hendrix loved basketball, golf, his animals, and photography.

He is survived by his loving wife of fourteen years, Doris Ann Shelton Hendrix, of the home; a step-son, Rick Campbell and his wife, Wendy, Telford; five sisters, Charlotte Dugger and her husband, Carmen, Elizabethton; Janene Allen and her husband, Bill, Kingsport; Linda Shelton, Kingsport; Mathilda Spires and her husband, Tommy, Lake Butler, FL; and Dawn Stover, Elizabethton. A special sister-in-law, Shirley Ferguson, Jonesborough; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Hendrix will be conducted on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Mike Koruschak, minister officiating. Mr. Steve Jones will deliver the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of Bruce and Jeanie Cakebread and Charles Dugger.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Monday, November 28, 2011 at Noon in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Rick Campbell, Tom Donaldson, Carmen Dugger, Jr.; Doug Garcia; Tony Shelton, Curtis Dugger, Jay Dugger and Todd Bishop.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Bayless, Carmen Dugger, Ronnie Ferguson, Ted Shelton, Bobby Stout, Dr. Jimmy Pearson, Richard Tittle, Tommy Spires, Bill Allen, William Stover, Jim Pearson, Randy Ferguson and Michael Spires.

Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #49. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 11:15 AM Monday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Humane Society, P.O. 134, Elizabethton, TN 37643.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the nursing staff and doctors at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, including Ann Marie, Nelda Buck, Lauren, and Jeff Saylor for all the love and care shown to Mr. Hendrix and the family.
