Frances Elizabeth Denny, 93, formerly of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Brian Center Health & Retirement in Clayton, N.C., following an extended illness.
She was born in Blowing Rock, N.C., on January 30, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Gordon and Florence Elizabeth Jones Pitts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Vincent Denny; a son, Martin Denny; two sisters, Nellie Goulds and Gladys White; and two brothers, Arnold Pitts and Donald Pitts.
Mrs. Denny was a graduate of Blowing Rock High School and worked as a bookkeeper for the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company and Barcel Insurance Agency, both of Johnson City, Tenn.
Mrs. Denny was an avid bowler and for many years traveled and bowled with various teams in the Elizabethton and Johnson City areas.
Survivors include two sons, James Denny of Johnson City, Tenn., and Kenneth Denny and wife, Margaret, of Kingsport, Tenn.; a daughter, Jeanette Denny Bryant and husband, Peter, of Garner, N.C.; two brothers, Homer Pitts and Harold Pitts; and two sisters, Kitty Viands and Mable McMahan. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Denny will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Grant Whittenbarger officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service on Wednesday at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
