Freeman L. “Hoover” Lewis, 86, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, November 30, 2012. in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Landon & Lena Beatrice Smith Lewis. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Mr. Lewis retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 47 years of service. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2166. Mr. Lewis was a member of the East Side Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Kemp Lewis, November 28, 1972; by a brother, Omar Lewis; and four sisters, Mabel Teague, Lillie Groce, Virgie Groce and Nina Lewis. Survivors include a daughter & son-in-law: Linda & Ken Land, Gray; two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg & Norma Lewis, Johnson City, and Richard Allen & Felecia Lewis, Elizabethton; seven grandchildren, Kim Thurman, J. Greg Lewis, Missy Leslie, Tamya Lewis, Traci Shepard, Misha Croley and Ashlee Newland;nine great grandchildren, Logan, Luke, Levi, Manny, Riley, Heath, Chase, Emmi and AvaKate; one brother, Earl Lewis, Florence, South Carolina; and one sister, Mary Richesin, Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews also survive as well as his special friends, Waynette Collins and Christian Bowling.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sherrill Nave officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Tim Castle. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday will be J. Greg Lewis, John Thurman, Rick Lesley, Steve Croley, Chris Shepard, Ashley Newland, Tommy Lewis and Logan Thurman. Honorary Pallbearers will be Greg Lewis, Rick Lewis, Ken Land Joe Davis, Cecil Guy and Danny Guy. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Friends may also visit at the residence of his children. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Lewis to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, Tennessee 38101-9908.
