Mr. Harry B. “Fuzz” Mottern, age 83, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Raymond Hal and Lottie Violet Reid Mottern. “Fuzz” had a real passion for life; he loved spending time at the family’s houseboat on Watauga Lake, was an avid golfer and loved to travel.

He watched Westerns and enjoyed World War II history. “Fuzz” served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the National Guard for twenty-three years, having retired as a U.S. Army Major. He was a member and trustee of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Winters Mottern, on January 30, 2013; a son, Raymond David “Little Fuzz” Mottern; and a sister, Margaret Mottern Brooks.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Ashley Ellis and husband, Jeremy, Nashville, TN; a grandson, Matthew Mottern, Johnson City; former daughter-in-law, Kim Lyons and husband, Rick, Elizabethton; an uncle, Lewis Norman Mottern, Charleston, SC; and a special friend, Bernice Taylor, Elizabethton.

Funeral service for Mr. Harry B. “Fuzz” Mottern will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 9, 2013, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Michael Koruschak, minister, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday prior to the service.

Interment will follow the funeral service in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Carl Ray Nidiffer, Eddie Wilson, Keith Tolley, Larry Woods, Ernie Largent, Terry Arnold, Gerald Arnold, Luke Nidiffer, Zack Nidiffer and Chad Allara. Honorary pallbearers will be Kent Williams, B.J. Taylor, Brady Williams, Mike Hardin, John Rash, Rex Johnson, David Smith, Larry Widner, Kevin Lipford, Dr. Harold Lane, Con Nave, Richard Grindstaff, Rick Broome and Ken Baldwin.

Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #49.

The family would like to express special thanks to the staff and physicians of Sycamore Shoals Hospital and to Frank and Mary Shepherd for their loving care of “Fuzz.”
