Helen L. Proffitt, age 82, of Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at NHC Healthcare following a lengthy illness. A native of Washington County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Fred L. and Clara Richards Proffitt. Mrs. Proffitt had attended Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Frederick “Lane” Proffitt III. Survivors include two sons, Frederick L. Proffitt II, Gray, TN, and Mark R. Proffitt and wife, Nina, Tazewell, VA; four grandchildren, Dustin Proffitt, Johnson City, Andrea Proffitt Moore, Johnson City, Melissa Proffitt and Matthew Proffitt, both of Tazewell, VA; former daughter-in-law and caregiver, Debra P. Shipley, Johnson City. Special lifelong friends, Doris “Sissy” Slaughter-Hoch, Daytona Beach, FL, and Betty Seaton Williams, Burnsville, NC.
The graveside funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Rick Powell officiating. Music will be under the direction of Katie and Ally Powell. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:50 P.M. Saturday. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Caris Hospice and NHC Healthcare for all of their wonderful care for Mrs. Proffitt.
