Hubert C. Layne, age 91, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at his residence.
A native of Tram, KY, he was the son of the late Isaac Lee and Cindy Caldwell Layne. He attended Immanuel Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran, having served during World War II. He also served as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. In his younger years he was an avid softball player.
Mr. Layne enjoyed his garden. He enjoyed playing the mandolin and guitar. Mr. Layne was a member of a Bluegrass Band, the Foggy Mountain Ramblers. He was a retired dental laboratory technician of Johnson City Dental Laboratory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Hester “Bill†Layne, of the home; a son, Herbert Layne, Elizabethton; two daughters, Serena Little and husband, Michael, Rodena Bowling and husband, Sonny, Elizabethton; three grandchildren Jessica Fitzgerald and husband, Lucais, Elizabethton, Lisa Wilson and husband, Dustin, Elizabethton, Garrett Bowling, Elizabethton; a great granddaughter, Victoria Grace Fitzgerald, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Layne will be conducted at 8 PM Friday, September 16, 2011, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Evangelist Sherrill Nave and Chaplain Ed Talley officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dustin Wilson, Pianist, and Mr. Layne’s nephews and their spouses, Bill and Dottie Potter, Barry and Marla Potter.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Friday from 6 PM until 8 PM prior to the funeral service. Friends may also call at the residence at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 17, 2011, in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors to be accorded by American Legion Post #49. Active pallbearers will be Michael Little, Sonny Bowling, Garrett Bowling, Lucais Fitzgerald, Dustin Wilson, Bill Potter and Barry Potter. Honorary pallbearers will be Everett Thornsbury, Gary Thornsbury Jackie Phillips, Dudley Price, Robert Perkins, Lawson Kerley, Dr. W.T. Baker and Gary Miller. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are ask to meet at the funeral home on Saturday, September 17th, at 10:15 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
