Iona Corene Grindstaff Poarch McClain, formerly of Elizabethton, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Port St. Lucie, Florida.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Mary Ann Grindstaff. She was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church and worked for a company that made flight boards for NASA.

Mrs. McClain was also a den mother for the Cub Scouts, a member of the Country Club and Women’s Flowers Club of Houston, TX, a member of the Supreme Council of the Mother Council of the World and the AARP.

Mrs. McClain was preceded in death by her husband, William Lloyd McClain; her grandparents, William H. and Sarah Jane Grindstaff; and by several uncles and aunts.

Survivors include four sons and their spouses; Buddy and Ruth Poarch, Port St. Lucie, FL, Donnie Poarch, Wellsburg, WV, Ronnie and Kathy Poarch, Fort Defiance, VA, and Johnny and Karen Poarch, Elizabethton; Twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a special first cousin, Helen Kate Tester, Elizabethton; several first cousins and special friends, Rae Merritt, Port St. Lucie, FL, Helen Brinkley Buckles, Edna Arnett, Gladys Garland, all of Elizabethton, also survive.

Funeral service for Iona Corene Grindstaff Poarch McClain will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 31, 2011, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Willie Campbell officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-2:00 PM on Sunday prior to the funeral service.

Interment will follow the funeral service in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
