Mr. Jack D. Young, 90, of Elizabethton died Sunday, June 19, 2011 in Hermitage Health Center.

He was born in Carter County February 1, 1921 and was the son of the late Sam H. Young Sr. and Rose Ann Dugger Young. Mr. Young graduated from Elizabethton High School and E.T.S.U. with a degree in Chemistry. He also attended the University of Tennessee. He worked for over thirty years at Eastman Chemical Company retiring in 1981. Mr. Young was a member of Southside Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served as a squad leader with the rank of Sergeant in the Chemical Corp. He saw action in Salerno, Italy and the Anzo Beach Head. Mr. Young was an avid hiker and photographer and had been a member of the Tennessee Eastman Hiking Club.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Young was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Young Jr. and two sisters, Iva Gouge White and Emma Ilene Young. Survivors include two brothers, Joseph C. Young and wife Willamae, Somerville, Ohio and Bill Young and wife Martha, Elizabethton and one sister, Elizabeth Young Brackman and husband Alan, Muncie, Indiana. Twenty-one nieces and nephews and thirty-five great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral service for Mr. Jack D. Young will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Mr. Mike Koruschak and Mr. Alan Brackman, ministers officiating. Eulogy will be given by his nephew, Dr. Keith Young. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Charles Dugger. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-7:00 P.M. on Tuesday prior to the funeral service or at the residence of his brother, Bill Young at other times.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 22, 2011 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #49. Active pallbearers will be selected from nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Southside Christian Church. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 9:15 A.M. on Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
