He was the son of the late Gaines and Gladys Clemons Spitzer and was born and raised in Elizabethton, Tenn.

Mr. Spitzer was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions as a paratrooper.

After leaving the Army, Mr. Spitzer worked for many years for J.I. Cornett Construction Company before becoming a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed raising cows on his farm and building houses, but his biggest joy was his family.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Callie Mann Spitzer, of the home; a daughter, Venessa Buck and her husband, Rick, and their children, Calla Sanders and Danielle Buck; two special sisters, Anna Mae Spitzer Stout (late husband, J.R.), and their children Sherry (Doug), Richard, Joe (Colleen) and Cathy, and Margaret Spitzer Wilson and her husband, Willard “Pete” and their children, Bob and Willard; a special uncle, Ray Clemons and his wife, Shirley; a sister-in-law, Gladys Mann; a brother-in-law, Alfred Mann; a brother-in-law, the late Raymond Mann’s children, Melissa (Dennis), Vickie, Raymond (Marie), James (Melissa) and Terry (Shatona); and several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive, all from Elizabethton. His close special friends include Pat Townsend and Earl Hughes, Brenda and Carl Shepherd, Gary and Margie Lewis, Keg and Tammy Mottern, James Cannon and Richard and Glenda Oatman, and his best friend, Leo Humphrey.

A graveside service for Mr. Spitzer will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Marvin Slagle officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday.
