John L. Fields

John L. “Johnny” Fields, 92, of Preston Place Suites, Kingsport, his home for the last five years, and formerly of Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, in the Greystone Health Care Center in Blountville following a brief illness.

Mr. Fields was the son of the late Leonard J. and Janie Qualls Fields and was born in Norton, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Gillenwater Fields; a son, John David Fields, and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Fields was a graduate of Norton High School and a distinguished veteran of WWII having served in the United States Army. He served in the European Theatre in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He also saw action in Algeria, French Morocco and Tunisia. He was the recipient of the WWII Victory Medal and was certified as a Sub-Machine Gun Sharpshooter. Mr. Fields was retired from Bunton Chevrolet, where he was the manager of the parts department. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton.

Mr. Fields is survived by a sister-in-law, Betty Fields, Bristol, TN; a brother-in-law, Leroy Pauley, Kingsport; and special friends, Helen Maines and Jim Deck, both of Kingsport. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Fields will be conducted on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethtond, with Rev. Ray Amos officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service.

Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.
