Lou Howell, 97, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. She was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Dan and Harriet Booher Carr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Carver; her second husband, Theodore Howell; three sisters, Mayme Thompson, Ruth Kate Thompson and Jennie Hughes; and a niece, Marilyn Hughes Pinckard. Mrs. Howell graduated from Elizabethton High School, Class of 1935, and retired from Carter County Bank as a head teller. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was involved in the United Methodist Women and the King’s Daughters Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Republican Women’s Club, the Elizabethton Business and Professionals, and served in several offices of the Elizabethton Women’s Club. Survivors include nieces, Phyllis Hall Clark and husband, Truman, Piney Flats, Janice Hughes Price, Seneca, SC, and Anne Hughes Bender and husband, Richard, Seneca, SC; a nephew, Richard Thompson and wife, Louise, Johnson City; great nieces, Deborah Price Bowman and husband, Jeffrey, Alison Bender, Tara Price Miller and husband, Matthew, and Laura Bender Walker and husband, Joe; great nephews, Eric Bender and wife, Amy, Clifford Hall and wife, Kim, and Jason Thompson and wife, Chasity; great great nieces, Katie Bowman, Kaleigh Hall, Lauren Miller, Chelsea Miller, Mackenzie Thompson, Carley Bender, Hailey Bender and Peyton Bender; great great nephews, Kessler Bowman, Clinton Hall, Tyler Thompson, Luke Walker and Indy Walker.

The celebration of life for Mrs. Howell will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 13, 2013, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Ray Amos, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jerry Barnett and Mary Lou O’Quinn. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday. The committal and entombment service will follow in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Clifford Hall, Clinton Hall, Eric Bender, Jason Thompson, Truman Clark and Richard Bender. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors and members of First United Methodist Church.
