Loyd A. Garland Sr., 80, of Johnson City, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, at Appalachian Christian Village.
A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Medford and Lucy Nave Garland.
Loyd served in the United States Army. He was a 1949 graduate of Johnson County High School and a 1953 graduate of East Tennessee State University.
Loyd was a retired District Claims Manager with Tennessee Farm Bureau, having worked there for 35 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Johnson City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mike Garland, March 8, 2012, and a brother, Sherrill Garland.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Doug Lowery, Houston, Texas; a son, Loyd Garland Jr. and his fiancée, Lynda, Gray; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Garland, Lynchburg, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Ashley Garland, Rachel Garland, Benji Garland, Roman Lowery and Heather Lowery; and a nephew, Keith Garland.
The funeral service for Mr. Garland will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Music will be provided by Mary Lou O’Quinn. The entombment service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be employees and former employees of the East Tennessee District of the Tennessee Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Friday to go to the cemetery.
