Margaret Joan Chestnut, 77, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away at her home and went to be with the Lord Jesus on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was the daughter of the late Kermit and Ruby “Pauline” Graybeal and was born and raised in Carter County, Tenn., and later in Johnson City, Tenn. She moved to Fredericksburg in 1962 when she married her late husband of 41 years, Carol “C.G.” Chestnut.

Mrs. Chestnut was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University, where she received a degree in Education.

She was a retired elementary school teacher with 34 years of service. She taught for 5 years in Tennessee and 29 years in Virginia with most of those years being at Spotswood Elementary School in the Spotsylvania County School system.

She was a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church, where she attended for over 40 years. However, due to her illness, she had been unable to attend in recent years.

She is survived by her son, Keith Chestnut, of Fredericksburg, Va.; her daughter, Kim Shipes and husband, Eric, of Spotsylvania County, Va.; her granddaughter Ariane Shipes, of Spotsylvania County, Va.; and one sister, Phyllis Goudarzi, of Johnson City, Tenn.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dan Wood officiating.

Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

The family expresses their appreciation for the compassionate care given to our mother and family by Mary Washington Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407; or to Fredericksburg Baptist Church, 1019 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
