Martha Inalee Birchfield DePue, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Gertrude Whitehead Birchfield. She was a graduate of Hampton High School. Martha had lived in Falls Church, Va., for 50 years, returning to Elizabethton in 2006. She was a receptionist at Cigna Insurance Company, Washington, D.C., for 27 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Stanley DePue, and a sister, Christine Whitehead Malone. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Donna and Joel Richardson of Vienna, Va.; two sons, Michael DePue and wife, Barbara, and Greg DePue, all of Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren, Eric Firnhaber of Washington, D.C., and Michael Stout of Arkansas, as well as step-son Ronnie Tolson and his wife, Joyce; and their children, Robert Tolson and Amanda Grasmick, all of Smyrna, Del. Also, a brother, Walter Birchfield Jr. of Detroit, Mich., survives.
A Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating.
