Mrs. Martha Thomas Chambers, age 88, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away Friday, February 8, 2013, in Hermitage Health Care Center, Elizabethton.

A native of Carter County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Joel Buford and Sue Piper Thomas. Mrs. Chambers was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where she was the editor of the Navy newspaper, the Letter Pusher. Her name is listed on the “Women in Military Service” memorial in Arlington.

Mrs. Chambers received her B.S. and Master’s Degrees from ETSU, and worked as a teacher and guidance counselor for the Carter County and Elizabethton City School Systems. She was very active in the community, having been a former member of the Elizabethton and New Smyrna Beach, FL, Woman’s Clubs and having served on the Board of Directors for 27 years of the Northeast Community Credit Union.

Mrs. Chambers was a member of First Baptist Church, Elizabethton, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a very faithful servant of the Lord.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Landon David “L.D.” Chambers Jr.; a son, Joel Christopher Chambers; and a brother, Albert Baxter Thomas.

Survivors include four children, Suzanne Zaremba and husband, Greg, Richmond, VA, David Chambers and wife, Suzanne, Elizabethton, Leigh McKeehan and husband, John, Elizabethton and Ed Chambers and wife, Tonya, Woodstock, IL; nine grandchildren, Nicholas Zaremba, Abby Suarez, Landon Chambers and wife, Kristin, Colby Chambers, Darrin Chambers and wife, Allie, Katie Chambers, Chris Brewer, Olivia Chambers and Emma Chambers; three great-grandchildren, Landon Suarez, Dylan Chambers and Anabelle Chambers. A daughter-in-law, Jane Chambers, Elizabethton; and a special cousin, Jane Greene and husband, Brumley, and their family, Greeneville, TN, also survive.

A memorial service for Mrs. Martha Thomas Chambers will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 13, 2013, in the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Tammy Greene officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. John Bunn.

Graveside service and inurnment will follow immediately on Wednesday in the Happy Valley Memorial Park with military honors being accorded by the VFW Boone Post #4932.
