Mary Clawson Johnson, of 125 Icy Lane, Elizabethton, passed away at Sycamore Shoals Hospital on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.

A native of Avery County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late John S. and Janie Greene Trivett. She had lived most of her life in Carter County.

Mrs. Johnson retired from North American Rayon Corporation in 1980. She was a member of the Valley Forge Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Clawson; a daughter, Lutherene Richardson; two grandsons, Richard Townsend and Bill Austin; a great-grandson, Shane Townsend; and a brother, Floyd Trivette.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Alma and James Townsend, Martinsville, Va., Bernice and Tom Deloach, Shirlene and Andy White and Andre and Herman Greer, all of Elizabethton; nine grandchildren, Mary Jane McKinney, Guy Townsend, Charles Townsend, Joe Guinn, Virginia Bradley, Brenda Stamey, Janice Gentry, Connie Hicks-Collins and Lutherene Richardson; 12 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two special friends, Irene Roberson and Ada McKinney.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. David Siebenaler and Mr. Clay Bailey, ministers, officiating. Music will be provided by her grandson, J.P. and Leona Mathes. Graveside services and interment will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, October 19, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 11:50 a.m. Friday, will be Joe Guinn, Guy Townsend, Charles Townsend, Bud Hicks, Dusty Bradley, Bryan Crabtree, Joseph Forrester, Jamie Townsend and J.P. Mathes. Honorary pallbearers will be Andy White, Tom Deloach, James Townsend, Earl McKinney, Bobby Collins, Herman Greer, Dr. Robert Walters, David Stamey, Earl Gentry and Sandy Bradley. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Dr. Robert Walters and the Carter County Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit at other times at her residence.
