Matthew Jerome Russell, age 43, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord Friday, December 13, 2013, at his residence, following an extended illness.

Matthew was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Paul Hilman, and his paternal grandfather, Delmar Russell.

Matthew was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Johnson City and loved sports. He was an avid Tennessee Vols fan.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Judy and Rick Ashworth of Johnson City; his father, Jerry Olen Russell of Elizabethton; his maternal grandmother, Pearl Hilman, and his paternal grandmother, Maude Russell, both of Elizabethton; his aunts and uncles, Brenda “Bee Bee” Persinger and her husband, Donnie, Rev. Steve Hilman, David Russell and his wife, Linda, and Fredia Williams and her husband, Walter, all of Elizabethton. Several cousins also survive.

The family respectfully requests your presence at a funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Matthew Russell Monday, December 16, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with the Rev. Steve Hilman and the Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Rev. Steve Hilman. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service Monday; or at the residence of his maternal grandmother, Pearl Hilman, 112 Hyder Street, Elizabethton, at anytime.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace preceding the interment at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Larry Marlow, Charles Henson, Larry Davis, Jimmy Vance, Justin Loudermilk and Bobby Winters. Honorary pallbearers will be Floyd Vanderventer, Darrell Vanderventer, Clifford Vanderventer, Darrell Milsaps, Paul Gibson, David Russell and Gary Claymons. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton to go in procession.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dima Youssef, Dr. Conchitina Crisostomo, Mountain States Hospice and Princeton Transitional Care for all the love and care shown to Matthew during his illness.
