Norman Leon Proffitt, 69, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2013, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born in Watauga, Tennessee, to the late Lawrence “Red” Proffitt and Cornail O’Quinn Proffitt, of Watauga. Mr. Proffitt was a steam fitter and a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local #538 in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was a United States Navy veteran, an avid reader and enjoyed history. Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Betty Ann Blevins Proffitt, of the home; one daughter, Tracy Tate, Watauga; three grandchildren, Cory Tate, Logan Tate and Blakeley Tate, all of Watauga; one brother, Riley Proffitt, Bristol, Virginia; and his extended family, Melissa White, Jonesborough, Chris Cannon, Johnson City, Rylan and Lucas White, Jonesborough, and Alexander Cannon, of Johnson City. A celebration of life service for Mr. Proffitt will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 14, 2013, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, where family and friends will share memories of Mr. Proffitt. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Thursday; or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Friday, November 15, 2013, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at 11:15 AM at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton to go in procession. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
