Obie Dean Vines

Dean Vines, 70, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, Monday, August 29, 2011, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Grover and Bessie Timbs Vines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Markham Vines, January 16, 2002; two brothers, J.C. Vines and Winston Vines; an infant brother, Raymond Vines; two sisters, Nell Cates and Orlena Gouge; and an infant sister, Velna Vines. Mr. Vines was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton. He enjoyed trains, gardening and old cars. Mr. Vines had previously worked at Smithdeal’s, Giant Wholesale and Tetrick Funeral Home. He also worked at Kroger and Fleming Foods for 18 years each.

Survivors include four sons, Tim Vines and wife, Lisha, Elizabethton, Jeff Vines and wife, Robin of California, Tony Vines and wife, Christina, Kingsport, and Jody Vines and wife, Kristy, Elizabethton; eight grandchildren, Joseph Vines and wife, Brandy, Watauga, Holden Vines, Johnson City, Jake Vines and Heather Vines, both of Elizabethton, Delaney Vines and Sian Vines, both of California, A.J. Vines and Samuel Vines, both of Kingsport; one great-grandson, Connor Vines, Watauga; two brothers, Otis Vines, Hampton, and Ed Vines of Maryland; and a sister, Billie Taylor, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Vines will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 1, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, September 2, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Nave, Orris Densford, Ray Lawson, R.V. Arnold, Richard Tester, Bob Vines, Tracy Trott and Steve Dunlap. Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Buckles, Kent Williams, Jim Birchfield, Johnny “Magic” Dadzie, Curt Walsh, Ken Rhotenberry, Bob Rutledge and Gene Estep. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
