Vernon Nelson Whitehead

image Vernon N. Whitehead, 78, 206 Greenbriar Drive, Hampton, passed away Friday, August 24, 2012, at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Dayton and Mollie Ingram Whitehead.

Mr. Whitehead was a retired Millwright. He enjoyed buying, selling and trading cars.

Mr. Whitehead was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Alan Whitehead; three brothers, Darrell, Lawrence and Billy Gene Whitehead; and two sisters, Voretta Whitehead Hill and infant Joyce Elizabeth.

Survivors include his children, Danita, Bobby, Penny and Shane Whitehead, all of Hampton; the mother of his children, Shelby Russell; a special niece, Kim Whitehead Davis; four sisters, Ruth Hill and Geraldine Arney, both of Elizabethton, Lola Butler, Hampton, and Peggy Whitehead, Elk Park, N.C.; two brothers, Byrl Whitehead and his wife June, Roan Mountain, and Brady Whitehead and wife Delores, Hampton, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Whitehead will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 26, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Cecil Largent officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 1 p.m. Monday, August 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Monday, will be Bobby Whitehead, Shane Whitehead, Ricky Whitehead, Randy Whitehead, Thomas Reine and Zane Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Ernie Largent, Clarence Largent, Jackie Blackwell, Dave Blackwell, Randy Whitehead, Raymond Hill, Mark Hill, Tom Stout, Jamie Bradley, Hershel Stevens, Mearle Townsend, Charlie Ingram, Roy Ingram, Todd Whitehead, Roling St. Clair, Randy Lewis, Rex Lewis, Bill Street, Paul “Gomarrow” Smith, C.J. Blackwell and Dickey Blackwell. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit at his residence.
